The 2024 women's soccer season for the Cardinals was a bar-raiser.
With Sunday afternoon's 2-0 loss in a Region XIV semifinal to No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Navarro College in Corsicana, the best season in the four-year history of the program ended with an 11-4 record. In the previous three seasons the Cardinals were 3-43.
The remarkable turnaround season, led by first-year head coach Jimmy Elder, who won five NJCAA Division 3 championships at Dallas Brookhaven College, saw the Cardinals go 9-3 in conference play, finishing tied with No. 10 Tyler with a 9-3 mark.
All four losses on the season were to nationally-ranked teams – three to Navarro (2-0, 1-0 and 2-0) and one to Tyler (4-2). The Cardinals also defeated Tyler at home, 2-1, for the first win over a nationally-ranked team. Tyler was No. 5 at the time.
Eight Cardinal wins were shutouts and the longest win streak was five games.
The Cardinals battled Navarro to a 0-0 halftime standoff. Navarro scored a goal early in the second half on a penalty kick.
The Cardinals advanced to Sunday's semifinal with a 4-1 quarterfinal win against Blinn Friday night in Brenham. It was their first regional tournament win. The game was called official with 6:32 left when a Blinn player sustained an injury requiring EMS transportation.
