Using a stifling defensive effort, the 12th-ranked Lady Cardinals maintained a share of the Region XIV Conference lead Saturday afternoon with an 85-48 thrashing of the Panola College Fillies at Cardinal Gym.
The Lady Cardinals built a 45-16 halftime lead on their way to improving to 20-5 on the year. They are currently tied with Angelina atop of the conference standings with a 10-3 record. The Lady Cardinals are attempting to win/share their 31st conference championship in 33 years.
The Lady Cardinals are open Wednesday and return to action Saturday at Kilgore in a 2 p.m. tipoff. Kilgore was a 74-70 winner against the Lady Cardinals last month at Cardinal Gym.
Lydie Mwamba and April Edwards led the Lady Cardinals, who have won seven straight, with 17 points each. Edwards had a pair of three-pointers.
Breanna Baxter had 11 points and Emani Jenkins and Kennedi Johnson 10 each.
The Lady Cardinals led 70-33 after three quarters.
