PERFECT START: Cardinal softball team 4-0 in conference play

The 17th-ranked Cardinal softball team is on a roll.

 

The Cardinals swept Northeast Texas Community College in 12-4 and 12-1 fashion Sunday afternoon at Athens High School to improve to 24-8 overall and 4-0 in Region XIV Conference.

 

The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action Wednesday in a non-conference twinbill at Alvin. It starts at 1 p.m.

 

The next scheduled home doubleheader at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park is scheduled Saturday, March 23 against Navarro College. Action is set to start at 1 p.m.

 

Here is a recap of Sunday's games:

 

GAME 1

Cardinals 12, NE Texas 4

(6 innings)

 

A 16-hit attack and five-run fifth inning was too much for Northeast Texas.

 

Abby Hollingsworth and Krystal Anne Castaneda led the plate assault. Both went 3-for-4. Hollingsworth had a home run and double and drove in four runs and scored three. Castaneda drove in three runs and scored three.

 

Kiara Wiedenhaupt went 2-for-3. She had a double and scored three runs.

 

Nicole Stuhr picked up the win in the circle. She went the distance, surrendering give hits and striking out three.

 

GAME 2

Cardinals 12, NE Texas 1

(5 innings)

 

The Cardinals scored nine runs in the third inning to send the game to a run-rule-shortened ending, which is the Cardinals' seventh such win in their last 10 games.

 

Alessandra Borjas was the winning pitcher. She quieted Northeast Texas, striking out three in going the route.

 

Ashlyn Weinert carried the big stick for the Cardinals. She went 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBI and a run scored.

 

Eight other Cardinals had at least one hit, led by Widenhaupt with a home run.
