A 2-0 start is in the books for the Cardinal softball team after a Sunday sweep in the Battle on the Bosque Tournament at Waco.
The Cardinals authored the perfect ignition to the season with a 7-4 win against Chipola. That was followed by a 6-4 decision against fourth-ranked Odessa.
The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action in their home opener Friday at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park. They play Vernon at 1 p.m. and San Jacinto at 6 p.m.
Here is a recap of Sunday's games:
Cardinals 7, Chipola 4
After spotting Chipola a 3-0 lead after the first inning, the Cardinals scored six runs over the next three innings to take control of the game.
An eight-hit attack was led by Kiara Wiedenhaupt, Allison Garcia and Krystal Anne Castenada with two hits each. Garcia had the most pop in the bat with a three-run him run in the third inning. She was 2-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs.
Sophomore Nicole Stuhr was well in control in the circle in a route-going performance. She scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked just one.
Cardinals 6, Odessa 4
The Cardinals relied on some seventh-inning magic to take down nationally-ranked Odessa.
Tied at 3-3 with one out and two on in the top of the seventh, Destiny Menchaca belted a triple to score Jaeden Burnam and Alizah Fields, both of whom had singled. Wiedenhaupt then brought Menchaca home with a single.
Odessa managed a run in the bottom of the inning.
Menchaca also had a home run to go along with the win-delivering triple.
Also getting extra-base hits were Wiedenhaupt with a triple and Addison Wittram a double.
Mikayla Marrujo went seven innings in the circle for the Cardinals to pick up the win. She gave up six hits, struck out two and walked two.
