VIEW FROM THE TOP: Cardinals assume SWJCFC lead

There's a new sole leader in the SWJCFC.

The 14th-ranked Cardinals scored three touchdowns in the second half and turned in a solid defensive effort Saturday afternoon at Bruce Field to come away with a 28-14 win against the Blinn College Buccaneers. That, coupled with Tyler's 20-12 upset of No. 1-ranked New Mexico Military Institute, leaves the Cardinals alone at the top of the conference standings.

The Cardinals, with a fourth straight win, improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Blinn tumbled to 3-3 and 1-3.

Next up for the Cardinals is a showdown Saturday in Corsicana against the eighth-ranked Navarro College Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1). Game time is 3 p.m.

The Cardinals broke open the game in the second half with a one-yard Quincy Thompson scoring run to cap a 98-yard drive and two Darion Peach touchdown tosses – a 46-yarder to Justin Austin and a 75-yarder to Jared Jackson.

Peace finished the game completing 26-of-34 passes for 342 yards.

Jackson had three receptions for 119 yards.

The Cardinal defense did a tremendous job against Blinn's No. 1-ranked rushing offense, holding the Bucs to 102 yards on the ground.

McCoy Casey and Daniel Williams had 11 tackles each to lead the Cardinals. Williams also had two sack. Michael Brown and David Tuihalangingie finished with 10 tackles each and Joe Sniffin nine.

Zayteak McGhee and Sniffin each had an interception

The Cardinal defense had 11 tackles for losses.

The Cardinals' next home game is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 22 against Kilgore at 2 p.m.
