FINAL CURTAIN CALL: Lady Cardinals reach fifth-place game

A season of challenges and history-making for the Lady Cardinals reaches a final curtain call today.

The Lady Cardinals (27-7) are scheduled to take on Tyler (29-7) in the fifth-place game at the 2018 NJCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.

Coach Tosha Spain's ninth-seeded Lady Cardinals advanced to the final day of the 16-team tournament with a 3-1 win against No. 4-seeded Navarro, which had won the four previous meetings this season. The Lady Cardinals took care of Navarro, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22.

Tyler, the tournament's No. 7 seed, was a 3-1 winner against No. 3-seeded Polk State. Tyler finished fourth at the national tournament a year ago.

The win against Navarro was a well-rounded team effort.

Yasmin da Silva and Juliana Vaz had 13 kills each. Lauren Castles had 12 and Maria Luiza Nicolau nine. Nicolau led the Lady Cardinals with four blocks.

Audry Lopez had 12 digs and Vaz 10.

Ana Paula Zandona dished out 46 assists.

Vaz finished with 14 points, followed by da Silva with 13.5, Castles 13 and Nicolau 11.

The Lady Cardinals and Tyler split two Region XIV Conference matches this season with each winning on the road.
