UPSET CITY: No. 9 Lady Cards take down No. 6 Panola

The NJCAA volleyball rankings will need to be adjusted.

The No. 9-ranked Lady Cardinals went on the road Wednesday night to upset the No. 6-ranked Panola College Fillies in a Region XIV Conference-opening battle of unbeatens.

By the end of the hour-and-a-half match, the Lady Cards left for the return trip to Athens with a 3-0 victory, winning 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.

The win improved Coach Tosha Spain's squad to 9-0. Panola fell to 10-1.

"I'm so proud of the girls … they never backed down," Spain said. "Everyone did a great job, whether it was the players on the floor or on the bench.

"The girls told me during the day 'we've got this, we've got this.' They knew what they were talking about."

The Lady Cardinals were down 7-3 in the second set and 6-3 in the third set before rallying to come out on top.

Standout performers for the Lady Cardinals in what Spain called a "total team effort" were Juliana Vaz, Audry Lopez and Ana Paula Zandona.

The win was the fifth against Panola in school history. Here are the Lady Cardinals' records in the series each season:

2010 – 0-2

2011 – 0-2

2012 – 0-3

2013 – 3-0

2014 – 1-2

2015 – 0-2

2016 – 0-2

2017 – 0-2
