Guy Furr is in his 22nd year at the college on the men’s basketball coaching staff. He now serves as associate head coach and a physical education instructor.

Furr served as head coach from 2016-20, compiling a 99-33 record. He guided the Cardinals to the NJCAA tournament in 2018 and 2019. Furr was voted the TABC College Coach of The Year for the 2017-18 season.  At the end of the 2018-19 season, Furr received the Region XIV Coach of the Year Award.  He has been part of seven trips to the National Tournament, the most of any coach in Region 14.  Two of his teams total wins (29 and 28) rank in the top four in most wins in a season.  He has seen over 120 student-athletes move on to four year schools and graduated over ninty percent of his players.

In his first 14-years at TVCC  (1987-92, 2007-16), Furr served as assistant coach to two NJCAA Hall of Fame Coaches: Leon Spencer and Pat Smith . Furr began his TVCC career on Spencer's staff in 1987. He left after the 1992 season to return 15 years later on Smith's staff.  Following Smith he assisted Kris Baumann, became the head coach, then assisted Mark Leslie.

When Furr left TVCC, he didn't leave the area. Remaining an Athens resident, he coached and was the head boys basketball coach and principal at Martin’s Mill ISD for five years. He then worked at Kemp ISD as an administrator for five years, including one season as interim head boys’ basketball coach. Furr then left Kemp for Murchison ISD, where he was superintendent for five years.

During his first tenure at TVCC, Furr was instrumental in recruiting Nick Van Exel and Shawn Kemp, both of whom went on to play in the NBA. Both players are considered future Hall of Fame selections.  Kemp was a member of the NBA Dream Team and played a major role in helping the United States win a gold medal.  Furr has recruited ten All-Americans and two members of the Cardinal Hall of Fame.  Furr later added another NBA player to his list of accomplishments when Jamin Echnique signed with the Washington Wizards brining his total of NBA players up to three.  Currently 14 of his former players are currently playing over seas.

Furr is a native of Murray, Kentucky. After playing basketball at Bethel College in Tennessee, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Murray State University and his master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He received his superintendent’s certification from Stephen F. Austin.

Guy has two adult children – a daughter Alex and son Preston.
