WORTH THE TRIP: Cardinals knock off NMMI, 56-29

The eighth-ranked Cardinals made the most of a 12.5-hour trip to Roswell, NM over the weekend, returning with a 56-29 SWJCFC victory against New Mexico Military Institute.

Now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference, the Cardinals get the week off to prepare for No. 4 and unbeaten Tyler on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Bruce Field. Game time is 3 p.m.

The Cardinals built at 29-9 halftime lead in Saturday's win and was up 42-16 early in the fourth quarter before NMMI came storming back. The Broncos (2-3, 0-3) pulled within 42-29 with 8:50 left only to see the Cardinals tack on a couple more scores to seal the win.

The Cardinals amassed 642 yards of offense, paced by the 130-yard, two-touchdown rushing performance of Khalil Banks. Banks averaged 10.8 yards per carry on 12 carries.

Peytton Pickett added 72 yards and a touchdown to the ground effort.

Quarterback Jaylon Henderson completed 15-of-27 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Henderson also ran for 55 yards on 10 carries.

Ten different receivers caught passes, led by Torin Justice with four catches for 74 yards. Tristen Wallace, Brayten Kubecka and Dhalion Phillips each caught a TD pass.

Angel Sevier booted a pair of 32-yard field goals.

Trey Baldwin led the defensive effort with seven tackles. Ryan Coleman, Marvin Terry and Luke Termin each recorded a quarterback sack. Terry had three of the Cardinals' seven tackles for losses.

Elsewhere in the SWJCFC, it was: Tyler 34, Blinn 22; NEO 42, Kilgore 14 and Navarro 71, Arkansas Baptist 6. Cisco was open.
